4. Assessment

Assessment within the SEND Unit at Westleigh Methodist Primary School is personalised, meaningful and focused on the progress each child makes from their individual starting point. Assessment is primarily based on ongoing teacher assessment, supported by observations of pupils’ learning, development and engagement.

Where appropriate, pupils may access statutory assessments with suitable access arrangements. This is more common for pupils working within Pathway 3.

We use a combination of approaches to monitor progress, including:

  • PIVATS (Performance Indicators for Valued Assessment and Targeted Learning) where appropriate

  • EHCP outcome tracking

  • Observational assessment of communication, emotional regulation and independence

Assessment enables staff to:

  • Identify the next steps in learning

  • Adapt teaching strategies and support

  • Review curriculum pathway placement

  • Share clear and meaningful information about progress with families

We take an inclusive approach to assessment, recognising that progress can be seen in many areas of development, including:

  • Academic learning

  • Communication development

  • Emotional regulation

  • Social interaction

  • Increasing independence

Parents and carers receive regular updates on their child’s progress through structured review meetings where we work together to support each child’s development and success.
