5. Our Environment
Our SEND Unit is due to open for eight Key Stage 1 pupils in September 2026. The space is being carefully designed and developed - we understand that the environment is just as important as the teaching.
Many children with autism and associated learning needs learn best when their surroundings feel calm, predictable and safe. Our SEND Unit environment will be designed to reduce overwhelm, build confidence and support pupils to feel ready to learn.
A Calm, Structured Classroom
Our SEND Unit will provide a learning space that is carefully organised to support pupils’ needs, including:
-
A calm, low-arousal learning environment
-
Clear visual timetables and consistent daily routines
-
Defined workstations and structured learning areas
-
Reduced visual and auditory distractions
-
Consistent expectations and predictable transitions
This structure helps children feel secure, understand what is happening next and focus more confidently on their learning.
Supporting Regulation
We recognise that children need to feel safe and regulated in order to learn successfully. Within our SEND Unit, pupils will be supported to develop strategies that help them manage their emotions, sensory needs and levels of alertness throughout the school day.
Staff will support pupils to recognise their needs and use appropriate strategies so that they can return to learning feeling calm and ready to engage.
Regulation First, Learning Follows
When children feel safe and supported, learning becomes possible. Our environment will be designed to promote:
-
Emotional regulation
-
Independence
-
Communication
-
Confidence
-
Readiness to learn
Over time, pupils will be supported to apply these strategies across lessons and in wider school life.
Part of Our Whole School Community
Although the SEND Unit has its own dedicated space, it remains fully part of Westleigh Methodist Primary School.
Pupils move between the SEND Unit and mainstream learning in ways that are carefully planned and meaningful. Where appropriate, children take part in assemblies, playtimes, educational visits and special events alongside their peers.
Our SEND Unit is another classroom within our school — designed with care to ensure every child feels valued, supported and able to flourish as part of the Westleigh Methodist Primary School family.
